Generation protection and Switchgear upgrade design and replacement for Nevis and Lacombe power generation facilities.

Generation protection and Switchgear upgrade design and replacement for Nevis and Lacombe power generation facilities.

Alberta, Canada

Problem definition: After completing the initial short-circuit and Arc flash analysis, it was found that the KA rating of the existing switchgear in the two facilities could not handle the available short-circuit current in the system. Upgrading the existing switchgear was also more expensive than buying brand-new, safe-to-operate switchgear. The system had an extremely high level of ground fault.

EAMEC scope: To develop the scope of work for solving the problems in the power system and execute the complete design for the new switchgear for both facilities

Proposed solution: To replace the existing switchgear with new switchgear, select properly rated equipment per the calculated available short-circuit current for each location, and design a new grounding system configuration, including sizing  NGRs for all generators in both generation facilities.

Steps taken from the beginning till the end: Field data collection,  As-Built SLD, Power System studies, identifying the deficiencies in the existing systems, design a new switchgear with current-limiting fuses and G60 protection relays to protect the generators, developed data sheets for the switchgear and NGRs, performed bid evaluation for the switchgear, worked with the client and the switchgear manufacturer during fabrication

Deliverables: Complete design package for the upgrade the power systems

Outcomes and benefits for the client: improved system safety and reliability, compliance with industry standards, more revenue for the client in a long run.
